Maribor and wine have been inseparable for more than 850 years – in industry and everyday life. The city with the oldest vine in the world is the heart of the Styrian wine heritage. On the tour, you will learn how wine has shaped Maribor's identity: from medieval markets and monasteries to personalities such as Alojz plemeniti Kriehuber, Rudolf Gustav Puff, and Archduke Janez, who have had a significant impact on viticulture and the development of the city.
From 1164, when the vineyard in Melje was recorded in the town's founding charter, through legends about the vineyards on Piramida and the influence of monks from Salzburg, Admont, and Šentpavel, we follow wine through the centuries. We touch on trials and tribulations – the phylloxera that devastated European vineyards and the winter of 1929 – and discover how the Old Vine survived floods, wars, and even a time when it served as a "laundry drying room." We complement our visit to key locations (the Old Vine, Lent, Main Square, Vinagova Cellar, Salzburg Court) with anecdotes about trading over a glass of wine and explain why Archduke John was so enthusiastic about Styria – and the Styrians about him.
