Maribor in the 20th century

Why choose a guided tour of Maribor in the 20th century?

It is a walk through a century that put the city to the test and shaped it into an industrial and social center. In the 20th century, Maribor experienced the rise of railways and factories, political upheavals, occupation and resistance, post-war industrialization, and transitions that can still be seen in the urban space today. The tour does not list dates, but connects places with people's lives, how they worked, moved, celebrated, and survived. You get a comprehensive picture of a hundred years of change that explains why the city breathes the way it does today.

What will you experience?
We begin our walk in the city center and tell the story of Maribor's rise during the Austro-Hungarian Empire, when railway connections brought economic and cultural momentum to the city. We will then pause at the turning points of World War I and the entry into the new country, the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes, and see how political changes affected everyday life. We will also touch on the period of World War II, the occupation, and the courage of the people who formed the resistance. We conclude with post-war industrialisation and life under socialism, when Maribor became a symbol of factories, new neighbourhoods and a fast urban rhythm, and we also touch on the transitions at the end of the century and their impact on everyday life in the city.
